Directed by Frank Martin, For Love of Liberty: The Story of America’s Black Patriots is a two part, four hour documentary that was released and will air on television this February. The film is introduced by Colin Powell, hosted on-camera by Halle Berry. The story spans the Revolution to the Inauguration of Barack Obama and examines why, despite enormous injustice, these heroic men and women fought so valiantly for freedoms they themselves did not enjoy. The project’s goal is to raise public consciousness and shed light on an extraordinary and relatively unexplored aspect of our nation’s history. The central theme of the initiative, the price of liberty, is relevant to all Americans.
What i find exceptional about this documentary is the cast they brought together to present dramtic readings from the diaries of those that were in the wars. The list of actors involved: John Amos, Angela Bassett, Tom Berenger, Roscoe Lee Browne, LeVar Burton, Anthony Chisholm, Chris Cooper, Barry Corbin, Bill Cosby, Peter Coyote, Walter Cronkite, Robert Culp, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Michael Clarke Duncan, Charles S. Dutton, Robert Duvall, Sam Elliott, R. Lee Ermey, Oded Fehr, Morgan Freeman, James Garner, Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, John Goodman, Louis Gossett Jr., Isaac Hayes, Dulé Hill, Ice-T, Asante Jones, Kris Kristofferson, Eriq LaSalle, Delroy Lindo, Jesse L. Martin, Harold Perrineau Jr., Jonathan Pryce, Alan Rickman, Cliff Robertson, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Susan Sarandon, Ron Silver, John Spencer, Donald Sutherland, Melissa Tang, Larenz Tate, Gordon Tootoosis, Robert Townsend, John Travolta, Glynn Turman, Blair Underwood, Courtney B.
