“The Yard” An A’Capella/Hip-Hop Musical goes to UIC Campus- Chicago, IL

February 15th, 2010 | By Isis

“THE YARD”

With the title stemming from college greek slang referring to the “schoolyard” (i.e. campus), “The Yard” is a screenplay written, produced, and directed by 24 year-old Southern Illinois University-Carbondale alumnus Brandon A. Williams. This particular piece of work is a story portraying college life involving characters from different backgrounds, upbringings, cultures and etc. It tells stories from the different perspectives of the various students, faculty, and members of the university and local community; some of these stories come from Williams’s personal experiences with his alma mater. The author labels this screenplay as a “acapella musical”. Similar to a musical, the characters’ lines transition from dialogue to verbal cadences and rhyme as a form of expression. However, instead of using song, the characters’ lines transition from dialogue to “spoken word” or acapella rap. Williams brings one of the major elements of hip-hop to the stage; being an independent hip-hop artist as well as an overall writer of comedy, poetry, songs, and plays, he decided to merge two of the talents together for his newest creation of artistic expression that is “The Yard”.

3 DAY COUNTDOWN UNTIL BLACK FRIDAY…

November 24th, 2009 | By JNichelle

black frievery year after thanksgiving day a multitude of people rush to stores to catch the best deals of the year. some people set their alarm clocks to wake them by 3am in the morning while others never go to sleep after their BIG thanksgiving dinner in anticipation to be in line so early as 4am in the morning, in the freezing cold, to do what… that’s right SHOP!

so why the name BLACK FRIDAY, well that’s still a mystery to me… my advise get a crew, black fri 2people who are not afraid of huge crowds and that will push back and fight for toys, shoes, clothes, etc., map out the stores you plan to hit and the sections you need to go to, choose a location that will have more than 17 products of the item on sale, and if you live in chicago you may wanna take that fun family, sing along trip to indiana. last but not least, watch for robbers, small yelling children, and old grandmas {because they will knock your behind over and think you won’t say nothing because of old age…NOT!}

ENJOY BLACK FRIDAY

When Paranormal Activity Makes You Paranoid

October 12th, 2009 | By SDot

When it comes supernatural mysteries, Paranormal Activity is one of the creepiest ones I’ve ever seen. Most of the time, I’m not much of a jumper or easily scared type of chick, but this movie will definitely bring it out of you. Once it gets going, you will not be able to stay put although the movie will have you glued to the screen. Its starts a little slow to make you connect to the couple as if they were you. They have an everyday routine as any normal couple would except they experience odd occurrences in their house while they sleep.

To avoid spoiling the movie, I will simply say it follows a young couple that suspects some supernatural activity is going on in their house and as a result Micah (boyfriend) purchases a camera in an attempt to catch some of it on video, or at the very least get the audio on tape. What begins, as a mere effort to find a way to stop this activity from occurring becomes a challenge to sleep while staying alive. From unexplainable doors moving, lights coming on and off, loud footsteps to fires and possessed spirits, this movie had loads of stuff to cause nightmares. Just to give you an example, my movie accomplice and I were so spooked after watching this movie that neither one of us went home that night. We’d rather be with our bu’s to keep us safe from Katie (girlfriend) coming to get us LOL!

The impression it made on an $11,000 budget with amateur actors goes to show just how far a little imagination can go. Paranormal Activity’s 99 minutes of pure madness left everyone speechless as they gathered there bearing and prayed that they would make it home safe. I mean everyone remember their religion that night even if atheist.

This is a film you must see in theaters to get the full effect and just pray you have a lively crowd. Men in the audience will be laughing loud and cracking jokes in an effort to hide their fear and the women will barely be able to control themselves as my midnight audience was screaming even before the scares.

It’s a joke how this film is being compared to 1999’s The Blair Witch Project. This film trumps Blair Witch to the fullest extent. I found Blair Witch more as a comedy where Paranormal Activity extremely is freaky, frightening and menacing. It’s a film I wouldn’t want to see twice especially since I believe in angels and demons. I would never get any sleep and that’s NO an exaggeration.

If you are any kind of fan of supernatural thrillers and seek out movies that will put you on edge, look no further. Paranormal Activity is the real deal and I would hate for you to miss it.

SPECIAL NOTE: Paranormal Activity is opened in 13 cities on September 25, 2009, but its expansion depends on audience demand. A website has been set up to allow moviegoers to “demand” it come to their city, which you can visit right here. I can’t stress enough how much I think you should do your best to get it to your city, this is a film meant to be experienced with an audience and not merely seen in your living room on DVD.
