Samsung Galaxy S is Here

July 14th, 2010 | By YourAddiction

In a world where cell phones have become staples in business and personal lives and many people are using their cells phones more than laptops, it is only right that the bar is raised over and over again and with the constant battle for cell phone supermacy over the ever so popular I Phone, the Android Market is striking again!

The Iphone 4 is in the streets and there are plenty of people hailing it the king yet again but the functionality of droids and the features they are bringing are making it rather hard for Apple to retain that crown. (The fact that the terrible service of AT&T is the only carrier housing the IPhone is also a deal breaker.)

Well right now the HTC Evo and the many equivalents are running the market with its’ over size screen and super fast processor but there is a new king set to hit the streets and overshadow all present Androids. Introducing the Samsung Galaxy S.

Features include:

The Samsung Galazy S offers a 4″ WVGA Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display.  Other key features include 1 GHz application processor, eBook, Daily Briefing (instant access to weather, stocks, etc.), Swype text entry system, and write and go (write down a reminder and decide later what to do with it; SMS, e-mail etc.).

The phone also will have other cool features depending on the carrier you have including 4G(Sprint) and the movie Avatar(T-Mobile).Check out the video demo:

This phone is awesome and will be releasing US equivalents to all of the major carriers, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular and even At&t. Visit the exclusive site for the phone for more info: http://galaxys.samsungmobile.com/

The Musicianship:Trying to Save Music and the Youth

July 6th, 2010 | By YourAddiction

During a time where there are more people succeeding but less people giving back we sometimes forget that there are still people who care. The Snewtonians are known for a lot of things from fashion to music but our movement is a lot more complex than it may appear. In order to fully where the mask of a Snewtonian you must believe in progression in all areas and for all people. Well, in that same light we would like to spotlight a young man that has truly shown what it means to be Snewty. As a Chicago native and a product of the Chicago Public School system( Morgan Park), Jefferey Tribble with the help of his partners have started The MusicianShip.

“The MusicianShip is a non-profit organization that facilitates music lessons, experiences and opportunities. While our mission is not exclusive to any one particular group, we are focused on at-risk youth, as they benefit most from positive outreach and music scholarship preparation. The primary components of our initiative include music schools that provide private and group lessons as well as city-wide marching bands. We create a healthy environment that fosters positive peer relationships, provides strong role models and builds self-esteem. Band performances provide students with a sense of pride and accomplishment, while contributing to the betterment of our communities.”

For those of you who have either played an instrument or just followed many genres of music, you understand the impact that music can have on your life whether it is helping a bad day, healing a broken heart, or giving a young person something else to care about other than gucci, hoes, ice, money, so it is overwhelming seeing a young man such as Jeff help steamroll such an organization. Round of applause and head nods of acceptance for Jefferey Tribble and the entire MusicianShip team for setting the bar and realizing where our future truly lies.

Visit The MusicianShip website: www.themusicianship.org and I advise everyone to go to their facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/themusicianship ,and fan and show support because this is truly a step forward from the many steps back we receive daily.

For all of those in DC or who have family and friends in DC, The Musicianship is now  holding a 6 week marching band camp and accepting students. Head over to their website or their facebook page for more info and contacts.

July 2nd, 2010 | By Isis

Check out her NPR interview. I am beyond stoked. This interview had me so nostalgic, I immediately went to find my Miseducation album. I’m glad we got to finally hear it from her as to why she stopped making music and why shes beginning to make music again. I wasn’t going to post this at first because its been all over the internet, but then I thought how could I not, Snewtonians rank her as the best female emcee and a damn great singer.

Tupac Shakur’s Dear Mama will be preserved in the Library of Congress

June 23rd, 2010 | By YourAddiction

DEAR MAMA BY TUPAC SHAKUR

Well it looks as if there is more fuel to the fire of the greatest rapper ever to pick up the microphone. I am happy to see something like this because with all of the nonsense that goes on with a lot of people it is very rare that we hear or even see the good in national news. Even though this will not be scattered across CNN as maybe Lil Wayne going to prison I feel it is a must. Congrats and a serious round of applause to the late and great Tupac Shakur proving to the younger generation that all of this money and fame means nothing if it did not help or touch anyone. Tupac becomes the third hip hop artist to achieve this honor (Grandmaster Flash and the duo Public Enemy are the first two)! Read Full Article Here: http://mee.bo/dwxgBP

June 7th, 2010 | By SDot

They have prime time TV shows targeted to teenagers and all the teenagers in the shows are having sex, they have video games that glorify killing people, they play music on the radio talkin’ about “fu*kin’ every girl in the world” (among many other horrible things), they have music videos of females blatantly showing off their “assets” …. but they ban this commercial of a baby walking down the street in his soiled diaper. Something just doesn’t seem right here America…

Chicago’s Urban Prep on Good Morning America [Video]

May 18th, 2010 | By Isis

I came across this video and thought it would be best that I share it with each of you on behalf of Snewty’s own Ms. Ferguson  and a classmate of mines Alfred Lee, who both work at Urban Prep and played a role in getting the students to a point where they could be admitted into college. In case you are out of the loop Urban Prep is an all boys charter school, both publicly and privately funded in the heart of  the Englewood community in Chicago. It made national headlines when all hundred of their African American senior class received admission to four year universities.

Top Ten Hot Career Trends for College Graduates

May 17th, 2010 | By Isis

Here are the results of  a study done by the University Of California San Diego. Check out these jobs.

1. Healthcare information technology. As technology increases, so does the need for health information technicians to use and maintain patient data that is vital for quality healthcare and to keep all medical records organized and confidential. Technicians are needed for emerging jobs such as healthcare integration engineer, healthcare systems analyst, clinical IT consultant, and technology support specialist.

2. Mobile media. Cell phones and other mobile devices are now multifunction devices that enable users to surf the Web, listen to music, download podcasts, use maps, access global positioning satellites, shoot and send photos and videos, and send text messages. With the countless new software applications, the number of ways to use smart phones is exploding.

3. Data mining. Looking for a needle in a haystack is a good analogy for data mining jobs. Data mining is the technique of extracting specific types of information or patterns from large databases, such as data warehouses. Advanced statistical methods sift through large volumes of data, providing answers to questions that were once too time-consuming.

4. Embedded engineering. There are career options for software developers willing to learn some new tricks. Devices from phones, appliances and televisions, to automobiles and iPods all use processors to run. These complex digital processors, or computers, are embedded systems, often built around a microprocessor core, that are designed by software engineers.

5. Geriatric healthcare. The growing population of seniors continues to have a major impact on careers in healthcare.   As the numbers of aging baby boomers increase, so does the demand for certain healthcare jobs and services, including nursing, personal care and home healthcare.

6. Occupational health and safety. More specialists are needed to cope with technological advances in safety equipment and threats, changing regulations, and increasing public expectations. Employment growth reflects overall business growth and continuing self-enforcement of government and company regulations.

7. Spanish/English translation and interpretation. For those completely bilingual in Spanish and English, these highly marketable language skills open doors to new careers. The key is to gain experience through practical internships in specialized fields such as law, medicine and business.

8. Sustainable business practices and the greening of all jobs. By the mid-21st century, all jobs will be green jobs. Organizations today must address potential regulation changes and look for business growth opportunities in the new era of sustainable environmental economics.

9. Feature writing for the Web. Technology has transformed journalism and marketing, creating new ways for how news and information are conveyed. The new medium allows for more interactivity, as readers respond via comments or blogs.

10. Teaching English as a foreign language. Interest in English teaching positions abroad has mushroomed. College graduates can find teaching jobs abroad, with travel as an added perk.

SMH!!! Artist are participating in helping the FBI now!

May 16th, 2010 | By YourAddiction

For most of the urban computer users, we all download music on the internet from time to time. It helps us keep up with the latest music and every now and then gives us the “I heard that a while ago” braggin rights, well for all of you out there I would suggest that you look out. Turns out the radio killer himself  The Dream has teamed up with the FBI in an attempt to track down music pirating “hackers”.

Last week, The song Champagne by The Dream was “leaked” on the internet and it can be spotted pretty much everywhere and I am sure that plenty of people downloaded it trying to get a listen to one of the tracks that are to be featured on Love King. Problem is the track will not be on Love King at all this is what The Dream had to say:

“Job Done As u know there have been several leaks around many records I do I am pleased to say the Record Champagne which was apart of a FBI investigation, has lead to three individual’s who’s (sic) been hacking us for the last two years. im sorry u guys have to here (sic) unfinished music so i took it into my on (sic) hands to have every record i make since 2009 logged with a Federal encripted (sic) Tag & will also appear on LK (Love King) And Champagne is not on LK! It never was!”

I can feel the basis behind this but this move is the worst and I did not expect this from The Dream at all. To all my music downloaders watch out for The Dream from here on and hopefully this does not become a trend amongst our more popular artist.

Famed Singer and Actress Lena Horne Dies at 92

May 10th, 2010 | By Isis

Lena Horne passed Sunday night in New York Presbyterian Hospital at the age of 92. Most of you might remember her as Glinda the Good witch in the film ” The Wiz”

but her credits extend further back than that. She is heralded as the individual responsible for integrating Hollywood, as she was the first black performer to be signed to a long-term contract by a major Hollywood studio.  She also had the most angelic voice and received tons of awards and international recognition for such. Her first film, in 1942, with MGM in the movie ” Panama Hattie” in which she sang Cole Porter’s “Just One of Those Things”.  The War made Mrs. Horne famous as she was also popular with servicemen, white and black, during World War II, appearing more than a dozen times on the Army radio program “Command Performance.  She toured U.S.O camps for performances and along the way became very outspoken for the ways black soldiers were treated.  It was that and her friendships with Paul Robeson and W.E.B Dubois that had her blacklisted in Hollywood “unable to do films or television for the next seven years” after her tenure with MGM ended in 1950. Absent from the screen she found much success recording. “Lena Horne at the Waldorf-Astoria,” recorded during a well-received eight-week run in 1957, reached the Top 10 and became the best-selling album by a female singer in RCA Victor’s history.  In 1981 she hit Broadway with a one-woman show, “Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music,” which ran for 14 months and won both rave reviews and a Tony Award.  She credits her ability as a singer to Billy Strayhorn. Looking back at the age of 80, Ms. Horne said: “My identity is very clear to me now. I am a black woman. I’m free. I no longer have to be a ‘credit.’ I don’t have to be a symbol to anybody; I don’t have to be a first to anybody. I don’t have to be an imitation of a white woman that Hollywood sort of hoped I’d become. I’m me, and I’m like nobody else.”

Check Out the video from A Different World as they give you a history lesson as well around the 1:30 mark

So heres a Snewty tribute and history lesson for you guys who aren’t familiar with her musical works. Feel free to download them if you like as well
