Comcast joins in with celebrating Black History Month this year with the introduction of Black Cinema On-Demand.
“We are proud to launch Black Cinema On Demand, an offering that spotlights the best in African American movies and documentaries,” said Payne Brown, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives for Comcast. “The African American community has played a vital role in our nation’s history and made significant contributions to our entertainment and music, and we are delighted to bring this content to the thousands of communities we serve every day.”
“Through its On Demand programming, Comcast is bringing important programming that highlights the history and culture of African Americans to millions of people around the country,” said Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League. “The National Urban League recognizes Comcast for its commitment to enriching the lives of African Americans across the country – this month, and throughout the year.”
With the launch of Black Cinema On Demand, Comcast will feature new films every month that focus on the wide range of experiences, accomplishments and the culture of African Americans through film. Black Cinema On Demand can be found under “Movies” > “Movie Collections” > “Black Cinema.” Films available this month include:
- Amistad
- Antwone Fisher
- Brown Sugar
- Do the Right Thing
- Facing Ali
- Good Hair
- How Stella Got Her Groove Back
- Malcolm X
- More Than a Game
- Ray
- The Best Man
- The Color Purple
- Tyler Perry’s Daddy’s Little Girls
- Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad all by Myself
In addition, throughout the month of February, Comcast On Demand customers will have access to a number of programs from Discovery, BET, VH1, History Channel, Biography Channel, Lifetime, CNN and more, and music videos that celebrate Black History Month. All Black History Month programming can be found On Demand under “Top Picks” > “Black History.” Black History Month programming highlights include:
- Roots Miniseries: Includes the entire award-winning, eye-opening television miniseries that follows the plight of an African man who is captured and forced into slavery during the 18th century.
- CNN’s Black Men in the Age of President Obama: This special takes a look at the growing number of black men across the nation who have been inspired by Obama.
Sundance Channel’s Brick City: This provocative five-part documentary series captures the daily drama of Newark, New Jersey as it strives to become a better, safer, stronger community, and was created and directed by award-winning filmmakers Mark Benjamin and Marc Levin. “
Directed by Frank Martin, For Love of Liberty: The Story of America’s Black Patriots is a two part, four hour documentary that was released and will air on television this February. The film is introduced by Colin Powell, hosted on-camera by Halle Berry. The story spans the Revolution to the Inauguration of Barack Obama and examines why, despite enormous injustice, these heroic men and women fought so valiantly for freedoms they themselves did not enjoy. The project’s goal is to raise public consciousness and shed light on an extraordinary and relatively unexplored aspect of our nation’s history. The central theme of the initiative, the price of liberty, is relevant to all Americans.
What i find exceptional about this documentary is the cast they brought together to present dramtic readings from the diaries of those that were in the wars. The list of actors involved: John Amos, Angela Bassett, Tom Berenger, Roscoe Lee Browne, LeVar Burton, Anthony Chisholm, Chris Cooper, Barry Corbin, Bill Cosby, Peter Coyote, Walter Cronkite, Robert Culp, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Michael Clarke Duncan, Charles S. Dutton, Robert Duvall, Sam Elliott, R. Lee Ermey, Oded Fehr, Morgan Freeman, James Garner, Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, John Goodman, Louis Gossett Jr., Isaac Hayes, Dulé Hill, Ice-T, Asante Jones, Kris Kristofferson, Eriq LaSalle, Delroy Lindo, Jesse L. Martin, Harold Perrineau Jr., Jonathan Pryce, Alan Rickman, Cliff Robertson, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Susan Sarandon, Ron Silver, John Spencer, Donald Sutherland, Melissa Tang, Larenz Tate, Gordon Tootoosis, Robert Townsend, John Travolta, Glynn Turman, Blair Underwood, Courtney B. Vance, Isaiah Washington, Al White, Lambert Wilson, Alfre Woodard, Jeffrey Wright.

On April 20th they’ll be releasing there final album. he name LeftBack has floated around in the past as the name of a future EP from LB , but this will be a full length LP. “I didn’t want our last record to be a bunch of second-rate material,” says Phonte . “I wanted to walk away from Little Brother knowing that I gave our fans all that I had to give, and said everything I wanted to say. With LeftBack, I’ve done that.” As far as producers go, look for appearances from Khrysis, Denaun Porter, Zo!, Symbolic One, J. Bizness, and King Karnov. Before you ask, no, 9th Wonder will not be on the album. Emcees on the album will include Torae, Truck North, Jozeemo, Chaundon, Median, with Darien Brockington and Yahzarah assisting on vocals. The album will come with four official music videos (all shot and directed by Matt Koza). Says Big Pooh , “Three albums, three mixtapes, one video. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in this day and age. We have always lacked in the visual department, and I think it will be refreshing to finally offer the people those visuals.” To top it off, LeftBack will also come with a limited edition DVD full of exclusive bonus material. As the release date approaches expect more details, including tour info. via Okayplayer

Well it seems that the first music legend tragedy has dawned upon us for this new decade and year. The Snewty family was sad to hear the news of Teddy Pendergrass death. However he leaves behind him a legacy of timeless music. So groove to one of my fav joints below and light one up in the air ,raise a glass, or just bow your head in memory of Teddy P.
