So starting this week everyday if possible I’ll up my pick for the top ten albums of the year. After an extensive listening of most (if not all) the major releases for this year (and only albums and EPs count), I ranked them based off how well the albums sounded to me in certain areas. These areas are: production, lyricism, flow, content, and replay value. From there this list was born…so enjoy what I came up with…
Lets start with pick 10

10. Redman and Method Man-Blackout 2Notable Production: Pete Rock, Eric Sermon, Havoc, and Redman
Guest Stars: Keith Murray, Eric Sermon, Bun B
Why its Number 10: Lets get one thing clear here, Redman and Method Man are what people would consider “old-school” hip-hop (its crazy to hear myself say that about Meth and Red), so to many of you these guys are probably conceived as being dated and not making whats hot. Well with the
Blackout 2, they reminded the naysayers that not only are Meth and Red relevant but that gritty, lyrics driven hip-hop is far from dead. Backed by some of the hottest producers in hardcore hip-hop, Meth and Red manage to entertain, while at the same time never sacrificing any of their creativity or lyricism for commercial success. Songs like “I’m Dope Nigga” is straight street music for those of us who are tired of weak ad-libs (AYE!) and straight tomfoolery in our music. While “Errybody Scream” (featuring Keith Murray) is a flurry of punchlines and wit that will definitely have to be replayed to catch them all. The energy they share is uncanny, and when you pair them with someone like Bun B for “City Lights”, you realize that these guys are still some of the sharpest spitters around.
Notable Tracks: City Lights,
I’m Dope Nigga,
A-Yo,
Four Minutes to Lockdown,
and Mrs. International...
