Cartoneros are poor trash collectors living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, who make a living collecting plastic bags and other recyclable commodities. The Waste for Life project is an initiative taking place to improve the lives of the Cartoneros. The main objective of the Waste for Life studio at RISD was to fabricate a hot press to turn the plastic bags collected by the Cartoneros in to a sheet material, then develop products based on that material which hopefully could be returned to the Cartoneros to manufacture and make a profit.
The original concept was simply to press layers of plastic bags, but thorough exploration yielded new solutions. By pressing an additional fibrous material, such as cheesecloth, into the plastic, new strength and functionality was achieved. Rain boots as the product were selected due to their material appropriateness and their utilitarian, purely functional nature. The plastic material is inherently waterproof and the necessary thickness of the material required for the rain boots is very minimal. The final design is extremely economical and easily produced.
The material is a composite of cheesecloth and low density polyethylene plastic bags. Each boot requires only 16 plastic bags, 2 square feet of cheesecloth, and thread.

So I came across this company called Three Apparel. It’s a Los Angeles based company comprised of about twelve artists. They design mens and womens tshirts, totes and more. Below are a couple of tshirt designs… see more of what they have to offer here.

I’m not a big Supra fan but I like these for the fellas and best part is the are only $70 bucks.
So Puma is next to jump on the “We have a new phone coming out too” bandwagon… and I’m not the least bit aroused.
The phone comes with an integrated solar cell, music player, camera and all the usual features of a modern cell phone. Of course the brand kept sports in mind when creating the device. It comes with matching apparel and sports equipment (GPS run tracker, GPS bike speedo, pedometer, yachting compass, etc).

e are so happy to see new color ways of the Dunk silhouette. Even though they are for women it shows that the brand is still conscience of their huge devoted following.
This pair accompanies an earlier gradient pair we showcased that hosted a darker upper with purples. This time around the gradient is still in place done in yellow, blue and grey with a grey base. Gourmet’s line-up continues to intrigue us, as here we feature two new colorways in the Gourmet Sedici model, both of which are slated to release for this Spring. The first features a red canvas upper, while the second also sports a canvas design, but in a tan colorway. Both sit atop white soles, with the NFN logo placed on the tip of the tope. The Trio CC has the style of a loafer but the integrity of a sneaker making for a very interesting design. Done up in canvas with leather trim each shoe has a chunky rubber outsole. The slip ons come in some funky color ways that include vibrant neon hues. Converse Japan really outdid themselves and created shoes that speak volumes. via SM (more…)
This year’s Nike Air Force 1 dedicated to the month of black history draws inspiration from the rise of Black enterprise, economic empowerment and the individuals behind the Harlem Renaissance. Covering the black leather upper is text reading “The definition of a renaissance individual: one who possesses a multitude of skills, talent and a broad base of knowledge,” in multiple types of font. On the inside, silhouettes of both a male and female figure appear, signifying the importance of both genders’ roles in Black History. Proceeds from all shoes sold will be donated to Cheyney University, the oldest Black institution in the U.S. – shot out to nicekicks.com

This particular line was inspired by the chicks- with-kicks clientele who want a more sexy look. The designers are Christine Su and Elizabeth Yoon and no surprise one of them has a background designing for brands including Adidas, Nike and Puma. What do you guys think.. hit or miss?
Gucci is hitting Spring/Summer 2010 with two colorways on its hi-top strap sneaker. The high end designer used premium leather in black or white colors to compliment that flashy design. Each has two click-able straps across the ankle and another across the mid-panel. Source
