Snewty Sits Down With Project:Fr3sh’s @PennBannekar

Dyvine Soul got the chance to sit down with Penn Bannekar and ask him some questions fresh off the release of his new solo project “Hello World”.

Dyvine:Tell us a little about Penn Bannekar. Is he an alter ego like T.I. and Tip? Or is Penn Bannekar you all day, every day?
Penn: I think Pennjamin Bannekar or Penn Bannekar is an alter ego because so many people tell me that “he” is totally different from how I am in my normal everyday life. A lot of people don’t even recognize my voice when I rap verses, so I would definitely say its an alter ego. The funny thing about it is, it just happens without me making a conscience decision to be Penn.

Dyvine: I know this sounds cliché but, when did you fall in love with hip-hop? I really got into hip-hop around 97.
Penn: I know this is gonna sound corny but I thought Puffy and Ma$e were the coolest dudes on the planet at that time and when Puff dropped “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” I was like… “I can do that”. No offense to Puff but if he can rap, then I KNOW I CAN! lol

Dyvine: If you had to choose, and only one, what song in all of hip-hop gets you the most hype?
Penn: Ain’t No Fun by Snoop. I don’t know what it is about that song but it’s my shit! We were all in Cali about 2 years ago in the club and that song came on… First, you gotta know I play the cool scene in the club and just chill and chat but when Ain’t No Fun comes on, I loose it!!!

Dyvine: Who is your favorite artist of all time? All genres included.
Penn: Michael Jackson, easy…

Dyvine: Who is your biggest musical influence past and present?
Penn:Michael Jackson… but to expand on that I’m influenced a lot by r&b music in general (I listen to waaaaaayy more R&B than hip hop) but Andre 3000, Jay-Z, Kanye, Common, Lupe, Elzhi, and Royce have all been influences to me at one point or another.

Dyvine:When did you decide to become and emcee?
Penn: I decided to start rhyming when Puff dropped “Cant Nobody Hold Me Down”. I remember buying the CD single (remember those?) and it had the instrumental on there. That was the first time that I actually sat down and really tried to make a “song”. Before that I used to always make spoof songs where I would just change the lyrics and make it funny like Keith Sweat’s “Twisted” where I was talking about a girl needing weave. Lol

Dyvine: I became familiar with you as the smooth flowing, dope kick wearer of the hip hop super group, Project:Fr3sh. Is this the same Penn you show the world on your album “Hello World”? Or is it more insightful into who Penn Bannekar truly is?
Penn: “Hello World” is the Project: Fr3sh Penn multiplied by 10. Doing a solo project allowed me to expand on different areas and explore different concepts. It’s not always easy to do that in a group setting because you want everything to be cohesive.

Dyvine: Because I’m a fan of Project:Fr3sh, I know that Mark Byrd and ChiLeak are very talented artists as well. Do you think being a part of Project:Fr3sh has challenged you to become a better solo artist? And in what way?
Penn: In short, I knew when doing this album that it had to be on par with what I was doing with Project: Fr3sh and there was no way to escape that. But if Breeze and Chi didn’t hear the album and feel like it was dope and it didn’t make them want to jump on some songs then it wasn’t where it needed to be. You always want the people that are in your circle to like and be supportive of what you are doing and I think I met that challenge.

Dyvine: I noticed Mark Byrd helped you out on this album. Was the collaboration any different than with Project:Fr3sh?
Penn: I started working on the project by myself because I wanted the album to be a Penn album as opposed to being too heavily influenced by Project: Fr3sh, so I went in and laid the foundation of about 7 or 8 solid songs before I took anything to Byrd and Chi to get feedback. But once they saw the direction I was going then it was easy to collab and finish the project up and it has carried over into their solo projects that they are working on and the beginning stages of my “new project”. But Kream (the person that believed in me 100% from the start), d.C. (producer out of L.A.) and Grinch (producer out of NYC) really spearheaded this solo project b/c they really got the ball rolling. If it wasn’t for Kream me about working with d.C. and possibly presenting a solo album there might not have even been a solo album at all.

Dyvine: Tell us a little about “Hello World.” Where did this come from? Why now?
Penn: “Hello World” was basically an introduction of Pennjamin Bannekar to the world. There are a few people that are familiar with my Project: Fr3sh work but they really don’t know me as an artist so Hello World gives a deeper look into that. I think now was the perfect time for it b/c Project: Fr3sh as a whole had really been absent on the scene for the majority of 09. There were many things happening behind the scenes but I felt like people were looking for us and what better way to start 2010 than with new music.

Dyvine: Overall, what message would you say that “Hello World” communicates about you and your personal approach to music?
Penn: I hope it conveys the message that I’m dope to be honest. But I really wish people could have seen what went on behind the scenes to create the album. So that’s definitely something I want to share with people when I do my next album. I want to give people a look into how I approach the music and what drives me to do the music.

Dyvine:I know it’s always hard for an artist to choose but, what is your favorite song on “Hello World”? Why?
Penn: I think my favorite song would be a toss up between “More $ More Dough” and “Acceptance Speech”. I just like the feel of “More $” and “Acceptance” is my “I made it” song that says so much with so little. But what’s funny is a lot of people have told me “Overdrive” is their favorite song and I always ask why and everyone replies the same. They all say the beat and what I am talking about is very real to them and ultimately as an artist you want to connect with your listeners and I was able to achieve that on that particular song.

Dyvine: Besides the music, what’s something you’d like your fans and all of Snewty to know about Penn Bannekar?
Penn: I’m a pretty silly guy. I love to laugh and have fun, Xbox is my drug as well as sneakers, (Nikes to be exact). I watch a lot of discovery channel as well as the History channel. I’m a huge Chicago Bears, Michigan Wolverines football, Yankees, D-Wade and Kobe fan, don’t really do the Bulls (until they get D-Wade lol) and I’m really a homebody if I don’t have to be out and about.

Dyvine: The ladies of Snewty have to give you your props, we think you’re quite fly. So, I have to ask for all the ladies out there… Is Penn Bannekar single? And if he is, what does he look for in a young lady?
Penn: First, let me thank the ladies of Snewty for thinking I’m fly and “I see you”. As far as your question, let’s say there is a long answer and a short answer and a complicated answer and an easy answer. I’ll give you the short and easy one… I’m not currently looking. Lol

Dyvine: And Last but not least, can you give us a Snewty-ism? A phrase or saying that showcases Penn Bannekar’s dopeness.
Penn: “Willn’t”. That’s the proper contraction for will not according to Penn because lets face it, you cannot “wo not” so therefore “won’t” is just wrong. So lemme use it in a sentence for you so you can get the usage right. “I willn’t be putting out any wack ish ever!” Lol
