9. Eminem- Relapse

Notable Production: Dr. Dre and Eminem
Guest Stars: Dr. Dre and 50 Cent
Why it is Number 9: For nearly 5 years we’ve gone without an Eminem album, but in 2009 Detroit’s golden boy returned with straight crack (no pun) with Relapse. Playing on his own issues with illegal drugs, Em takes us back into the twisted world within his mind. And this entire trip is given a soundtrack by Dr. Dre, who is in rare form on this album. The sound throughout Relapse, with a few exceptions, is dark, haunting, and sometimes crazy. But that’s fine, because Em wants to show us a world where drug use, molestation, and over the top violence are totally acceptable. We can’t really get to into the album without at first addressing Em’s flow, which is one of (if not the) best flows in hip-hop. Really the reason why the subject matter on this album doesn’t just make you want to hurl your cd or hard-drive is because Em’s flow convinces you that its okay. The other half of the equation is Em’s lyrics. In an era where people actually try and divide a lyricist from an emcee, Eminem continues to show us that lyrics are the key component of hip-hop. This however does hurt Em as well. Since people already have certain expectations from him, when he does not meet them, people automatically call it wack. This happened on Relapse, since at times Em seems to be too over the top when listeners just want to hear some things that are more tame. We can see this on tracks like “Bagpipes from Baghdad”, which isn’t a bad track but its slightly incoherent at times. When Em really wants to drive home a message, like on “Beautiful”, you find that he is one of the best to ever do this. Bringing up memories of Tupac, Em gives us a true glimpse into his psyche. Overall, this album could have taken the top spot on this list if Eminem took things somewhat more seriously at times. This is far from a bad product, its just its lacking that punch we were all anticipating this year.
Notable Tracks: Beautiful, Medicine Ball, Same Song & Dance, and Stay Wide Awake
