First it was Marshall Fields, then Willis Towers, then we lost the Olympic Bid, we’re losing convention business left and right, violence is at an all time high, Chicago Public Schools is in turmoil, and now Oprah is retiring and leaving Chicago to start a network in L.A.. First let me start by saying I have nothing against L.A., S Dot is in L.A and it is a nice city. Now I understand that Oprah is free to do with her money as she pleases, seeing as how she has gone from rags to richest. However, Oprah would not be who she was without Chicago. Furthermore, lets talk about how this move will effect the very city she claims to love. The Oprah Winfrey Show has been a staple for Chicago tourism and attraction. It brings tons of guest to the city, business and opportunities. Now I didn’t expect the show to stay around forever but I do expect some sort of trade off. I don’t understand why Oprah has to go to L.A to do her network thing. Why couldn’t she start her own shit here in L.A. She has enough money. Furthermore why didn’t Oprah see this as an opportunity to pull together other successful wealthy African American entrepreneurs in the industry to establish their own entity. Lets be realistic, at the end of the day Hollywood is and has never been an individual with dark pigments friend. Think about it. What happened to all the Black sitcoms, or the Black movies of substance. Why have our actors resorted to Broadway and prime time television shows and their still young and in there prime. It’s because Hollywood won’t give them any work. Now I know politics has a lot to do with Oprahs decision but I am in no way shape or form happy with it. I never have been able to understand why, if you made your way into success by pulling yourself up by your boot straps, then why when you come successful and have the opportunity, do you choose to play by societies rules and not impose your own. Realistically we all have seen how Oprah’s show has changed. The audience is majority Caucasian and we never complained because they we’re feeding Oprah and in term helping to maintain this symbolic notion of wealth and obtainment for our culture as a whole. Oprah had to bring certain guest and curtail certain topics to keep her viewers interested and her ratings up. However now that she is retiring I would love to see her reimpose diversity with her last shows and revitalize topics that affect the African American community. I would love to see her bring a black doctor on to the show, a black author for her book club, hell even an Hispanic doctor or author. Oprah has made all these other people rich who have been able to start there own shows etc because she gave them their stamp of approval. Oprah if you are gonna leave Chicago you need to cosign some of our Minority professionals here in the city before you go and you can start with Snewty.
